Interior painting cost depends on the surfaces, their condition and the access needed to finish them. For a Dundalk home, the most useful starting point is a written room-by-room scope. A price for bedroom walls cannot be compared directly with a price that also includes ceilings, doors and skirting boards.
Online Irish price guides can help you begin a budget, but they do not establish what your own house will cost. Start with the work you want, ask what is included, then compare quotations against the same list. Photos help begin that discussion; a visit may be needed to assess preparation and access.
What an interior quote includes
Describe every room by name and list the surfaces separately. A room is a convenient label, not a specification. A sitting room with a sound ceiling and no woodwork changes is a different job from the same room with stained plaster, previously glossy walls and several doors.
- Walls: number of rooms, approximate dimensions, existing finish and proposed colour change.
- Ceilings: whether included, approximate height, staining or damage requiring assessment.
- Woodwork: skirting boards, architraves, window boards, doors and frames. State which door faces are included.
- Preparation: ordinary making-good, specialist preparation, removal work and repairs should be distinguished.
- Materials: who supplies each coating, its range and finish, and whether primers or sundries are included.
- Practical arrangements: furniture movement, floor protection, access equipment, waste and final room handback.
Do not assume that every item is a service offered or automatically included. For example, a damp repair and a wall repaint need different responsibilities. Ask for exclusions as clearly as inclusions. If a ceiling stain remains unexplained, establish who investigates it before it becomes a coating decision.
The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland contractor checklist encourages homeowners to clarify scope, VAT, materials and working arrangements. Although written for wider building projects, those comparison questions are useful for painting too.
Comparing the same rooms and surfaces
Copy each quotation into a simple comparison sheet. Leave an unanswered field blank and ask about it; do not silently treat it as included. A short clarification can explain an apparent price difference more usefully than negotiating from an incomplete total.
| Scope item | Question to resolve | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom ceiling | Included or walls only? | A separate surface adds preparation and application work. |
| Doors | How many, which faces and which frames? | Detailed edges and multiple components need an explicit count. |
| Existing marks | Routine filling or further investigation? | The remedy may sit outside ordinary decoration. |
| Paint supply | Named product, colour and finish? | A material allowance and an exact coating specification are different. |
| Total payable | What tax and agreed extras are included? | Headline figures may use different assumptions. |
Hypothetical comparison: one proposal describes two bedrooms, walls only, with the homeowner clearing furniture and supplying paint. Another describes those bedrooms with ceilings and woodwork, paint supplied and furniture arrangements included. Neither is automatically better value. First ask both painters to price the same chosen scope, then compare the result.

Preparation and access that change the price
Two houses with similar floor areas can need different amounts of work. Floor area alone does not describe the number of doorways, height over a stairwell, amount of trim or condition beneath wallpaper. Include these differences before treating a square-metre rate as meaningful.
Photograph peeling paint, recurring cracks, patched plaster and water marks separately. Say whether the problem is recent, whether it has returned after previous decorating and whether an underlying cause has been addressed. A painter should not have to infer a repair history from a cropped photograph.
Furniture affects usable working space. An empty room, a room with a central furniture group and a room with no safe circulation are different access situations. Agree who moves heavy items and where they go. Do not move something you cannot handle safely simply to try to reduce the painting bill.
Stairs and tall ceilings deserve their own photographs. Show the whole space from a safe floor position, including the floor beneath the high area. Ask how suitable access will be assessed. No saving on a quote justifies an improvised ladder arrangement.
Colour changes also need context. Moving from a strong shade to a light one can affect the coating system and coverage. Ask what happens if the agreed finish needs additional work, rather than assuming that every colour change has the same fixed coat count.
Dated Irish benchmarks versus your own quote
At the time of research on 31 October 2026, MyBuilder Ireland's published cost guide listed €300 to €600 for a single bedroom's walls and ceiling, described as two coats excluding materials. That is a publisher's budgeting estimate, not a verified Dundalk transaction or our price list. It does not establish the size, condition or woodwork scope of your bedroom.
Use that kind of benchmark to ask better questions, not to overwrite an inspected quotation. A guide with labour-only figures cannot be compared directly with a price including coatings, extensive preparation and several door sets. We have not supplied a local average or a completed customer example because neither is established by those sources.
A budget worksheet before you enquire
- Write the must-have rooms and surfaces first.
- Separate optional work, such as another bedroom, into an alternative price request.
- Record known defects and any repairs still awaiting assessment.
- Confirm paint supply, tax, access and payment terms in writing.
- Ask how changes found after work begins will be discussed and approved.
- Keep a copy of the final agreed scope with the quote.
A smaller, complete scope is easier to evaluate than a broad instruction to freshen the house. If the budget is tight, ask about phasing whole rooms or surfaces while keeping the desired end result clear. Avoid cutting preparation out of a coating system simply to fit a headline figure.

Questions about interior painting quotes
Is a day rate enough to compare quotations?
A day rate does not establish the total days, materials or complete scope. Ask what the rate covers, how work is measured and how the likely total is described. Compare the same surfaces and arrangements. A lower daily figure may still relate to a different overall job.
Should I buy paint before asking for a quote?
Discuss the system first. Colour, background, finish and quantity need to agree, and supply arrangements should be clear. Buying a large quantity early can leave you with a product that does not suit the preparation or room. Samples are a separate decision from buying the complete coating system.
Can photos establish a final price?
They help identify rooms, surfaces and visible defects, but cannot show every background or access issue. A visit may be needed, particularly for failed paint, high stairwells or mixed repairs. Treat photos as the beginning of the scope discussion rather than a guarantee of a final remote quotation.
